I had unpacked all my stuff by the time Glory called me back to the house for lunch. Quinn and Kora were joining us for the meal, and Glory had made everyone turkey sandwiches with a salad.

Glory tried to make small talk, but Kora still looked like she wanted to murder me, and Quinn and Dot were both being quiet and they didn’t seem to notice the awkward silences. Quinn also kept sneaking bits of food to Biscuit under the table, solidifying her permanently as Biscuit’s new favorite person. I was trying to not feel betrayed, and I snuck a piece of lunch meat to Biscuit, but she immediately returned to Quinn, who had ripped off a corner of crust for her. I probably should have told her Biscuit would have a weight problem if I wasn’t careful with table scraps and treats, but now didn’t feel like the right time to explain. Plus, maybe living on the farm would mean Biscuit could finally have all the exercise she ever wanted. I could already picture her having the time of her life frolicking off leash in the apple orchards. It would be a huge improvement from going for city walks on dirty sidewalks.

Ask a question , I told myself. Glory was doing all the heavy lifting, trying to get people to talk, but no one was biting. Mostly because Glory was nervously saying things like, “The weather is so nice today!” And: “Don’t you just love turkey sandwiches?” They weren’t exactly the kind of questions that got conversations started.

There was a ton of stuff I wanted to know about the farm, the orchard, and each of them, but I wasn’t even sure where to begin. And every single time I thought of something to ask, some perfectly ordinary question, like: What kind of apples do you grow? I would start to feel a nervous bubble of anxiousness rise in my throat and I’d decide to keep my mouth shut.

The easy, comfortable feeling I had previously shared with Glory was very quickly evaporating in the presence of her roommates. It kind of made me wish we would have lounged around my apartment longer and got to know each other more before coming here, but it was too late for that now.

Kora polished off her lunch and then abruptly stood.

“We have work to do,” Kora said. “We’re barely done half of the orchard thinning and we still need to get the bagging done, and we’re down a hand since Jaina is helping at the ranch today.”

“You’ll meet Jaina when she's here tomorrow,” Glory added quickly.

“Are you coming, Quinn? Dot?” Kora asked.

“Do I have to?” Dot whined.

“Yes,” Kora said sternly. “Quinn, are you just about done?”

“Oh, yes,” Quinn said, and slipped her last bit of bread to Biscuit.

It already looked like Biscuit’s little wiener-dog body had gained three pounds.

“I was going to show Dennis around town today,” Glory said. “But we’ll help in the orchard tomorrow, I promise.”

“He’s going to be helping?” Kora asked, lifting one of her perfectly arched eyebrows.
